01. Customer Profile
A personal care brand wanted to modernize its existing hand soap, sold in a 500 ml family size. Its existing hand wash range used standard PET bottles with lotion pumps, but the upgrade product was intended to dispense foam as soon as the pump was pressed.
Our client wanted to keep the 500ml size and the same color and design as the original handwash product. They don't want to start from scratch and redesign completely new bottle shapes and label designs.
02. Project Challenge
Initially, the client planned simply to replace the existing pump with a foam pump on the original 500 ml bottle; however, the bottle's neck structure proved incompatible with commercially available foam pumps.
Developing a new bottle mold would not only have increased the initial investment and development time but would also have required adjustments to the original graphic design. Furthermore, the client needed to verify whether the existing formula was suitable for foam dispensing, as changing the pump mechanism does not guarantee that the original liquid formula will produce foam meeting the required standards.
03. Our Packaging Solution
To avoid the need to develop a new mold, we selected an existing 500 ml bottle equipped with a foam pump. During the selection process, we considered criteria such as the bottle's proportions, the front display area, the ability to retain the original layout, and the pump's compatibility with the client's formula.
Once the bottle was chosen, we compared various pump models based on performance: initial foam output, dosage per stroke, smoothness of continuous pumping, and the responsiveness of the return mechanism. We then considered how the filled package would be handled during transport. To reduce the risk of accidental dispensing, the final solution used a lockable 500ml foam pump bottle. The locking mechanism kept the actuator in place during handling and shipping. Aesthetically, the new bottle retains proportions and a front display area similar to the original packaging. This allows the client to adapt their existing logo, product name, and layout rather than redesigning everything from scratch. The pump color can either maintain continuity with the current product line or serve to distinguish this new foaming version.
The final solution consists of a 500 ml bottle with a foam pump and locking system; this approach avoids the costs associated with creating new tooling while preserving the brand's original visual identity.
