THE PRODUCT
The physical experience of a face cream jar
| People have a different connection to the Physical making use of the body, with the Lotion Bottle and the Face Cream Jar; many body care products are designed in ways that will allow people to use and see the product in different ways, where as most body care (moisturizer) will have a thick or rich feel to them. The fact that you can open a jar and see the surface of the cream and then remove the cream is a must-have on how a person's visual understanding of a Moisturizer or Treatment Cream is created. | Plastic jars for face cream are built off of this very familiar format of how people expect to see and use something. The size and shape of a 50g plastic jar are similar to how a person uses the majority of their skin care products. Due to this familiarity, a consumer will have a sense of what a full size product will be and therefore will create a purchasing decision based on their familiarity with the 50g jar as a complete size skin care product. Many different products that fall into the category of Face Cream (e.g., moisturizer, night cream, repair cream, sleeping masks and balms) can be used with a 50g jar. |
WHY 50G
Why brands choose this format
|
Retail recognition that signals a complete, full-size product Familiarity & Positioning The value of a plastic 50g jar for daily use is that your potential customers can relate to its existence within their life. They understand that a 50g plastic jar will have the same feel (and look) that they are accustomed to seeing at various retail store locations and have the same gifting experience as they do at their home/office locations. If you are launching a Hero Cream, or daily Moisturizer, you will want to use this format to enhance the likelihood that the consumer will recognize and remember your product as a complete Face Care Product. |
Built for thick, concentrated formulas Formulation The 50g plastic jars will also be great for thicker formulas, as many thicker creams will not be able to be put into pump (e.g., lotion) bottles or tube (e.g. cream in tube). In order for a thicker cream to have a truly nourishing or concentrated feel, it will need to be placed into a container designed specifically for thicker creams (ie. jar). Using wide-mouth jars makes it easier for you to show off your products and their textures. This can be important for presenting creams because one of the ways you present your cream is through its appearance, thickness, or surface finish. |
MATERIAL
PET Plastic: Retail Look, Production Flexibility
By utilizing PET plastic, brands can take advantage of maintaining the traditional shape of a cream jar while also creating a lighter weight than glass. For private label skincare brands, e-commerce sellers, or wholesaling beauty projects, a PET cream jar allows for an optimal balance between retail look and production capabilities. Since using PET jars allows for bulk handling more easily, they can also help to create a clean, polished look in skincare.

BRAND DIRECTIONS
One jar format, many brand stories
These plastic jars of face cream can support different brand directions. A clear jar can allow for the presentation of cream color and texture, while frosted or matte jars provide softness in texture for a cream. Different colors of jars can aid in differentiating formulas such as day cream, night cream, repair cream, or brightening cream. With custom logos and decoration options available, it is easy to use the same jar for clean beauty, spa skincare, clinical care, or more colorful beauty products.
Packaging needs to accomplish two things for a private label face cream project: It must be familiar enough so that consumers can trust it, but flexible enough to allow the brand to make it their own. A 50-g plastic cosmetic jar should give brands the baseline from which they can create. It is an accepted standard size for creams, but the shape of a jar can still be influenced by color, surface finish/texture, lid style and/or appearance/decoration.

CASE STUDY
Turning a Formula into a Hero Cream
|
To put this idea into context, a small skincare brand approached us to help them create their first 'hero' cream from an existing moisturizer formula.
Initially they wanted us to create a small sample/trial jar because they were concerned about production costs and the minimum order quantity for production; however, as the product was going to have a 'daily repair' position in the market, it could not be a small sample or bonus product.
We recommended that they use a 50g PET (clear plastic) jar for the container instead. This would give the cream a more powerful retail image (compared to the typical 30g sample/trial jars), and the use of a plastic container would also make it easier to ship and purchase as a 1st production run.
Using a frosted jar, a plain lid colour and a simple label on the front created a sense of calmness, completion and an 'in-stock for skincare retail' image for the cream itself. |
As a result of our work with this specific product, not only did we fill the jar with the original cream formula, but the final packaging made the cream feel like the 'hero' of the entire product range of the skincare brand.
In a gift box, the filled jar no longer looked like a small additional item. On the 'product page', the 50g cream jar gave customers a better understanding that the cream they were purchasing was actually a full size face cream for everyday use.
By properly configuring the right type of plastic cream jar, many brands that manufacture moisturizers, night creams, sleeping masks and repair creams can influence customer's perception of how the product will perform even before they try the formula itself.
In addition to providing a common package for face creams, these plastic jars for face cream allow the skincare brands that use them to create their own custom colours, surface finishes, lid styles and/or decoration to use on the jars so they will build their own brand image of face creams based solely on the appearance of the containers. |
